Are you planning a trip to Cairo, Egypt? Check out my top tips for traveling as a solo female to Cairo.
In addition to my visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza, I booked a private tour of some of the other historical highlights of Cairo that were recommended to me. I booked with Maryam, the same excellent Egyptologist that I toured the Great Pyramids with.
Traveling as a solo female to Cairo
We visited the Mohamed Ali Mosque, which is just stunning. The mosque is located in the Citadel of Cairo (or Citadel of Saladin) and was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848. It’s said to be one of the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century.
If you only have one day in Cairo
On the same day, we also visited Coptic Cairo, including several churches like the Cavern Church. This church is where Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lived for 3 months when they fled from King Herod. You can see the cavern where they lived, and the well they used. Coptic Cairo is part of the old Cairo, and as you can imagine, rich in history!
Another spot on our itinerary was the Egyptian Antiquities Museum. Although I’m not normally a big fan of history museums or museums in general, this one was incredible. There are so many artifacts that paint the story of the olden days, including items from King Tut’s tomb that are covered in gold!
Trying the Egyptian national dish
And finally, we rounded out our tour by enjoying the Egyptian national dish, koshary! It’s a traditional Egyptian staple, mixing pasta, Egyptian fried rice, vermicelli, and brown lentils. Moreover, it’s topped with a zesty tomato sauce, garlic vinegar and garnished with chickpeas and crispy fried onions.
It was a thoroughly informative and interesting day in Cairo!
