Check out my first solo travel to Israel!

After leaving Egypt, Israel was a nice stop. Although an expensive country, it feels more like Europe in regard to culture. No one paid me any attention whatsoever, which was a really nice break.

First time traveling to Israel

I spent about ten days in an Ultra-Orthodox part of Jerusalem, close to the old city of Jerusalem. It was a really cool cultural experience to observe Ultra-Orthodox Jews on the Sabbath and see how quiet the city gets. I was also in Jerusalem during the time when there were a lot of political protests due to changes in the government that were leaning towards dictatorship. It was an interesting time to be there, as well as it being Passover, Ramadan, and Lent.

Best tips for solo travel to Israel

I tried chicken schnitzel from a local restaurant (yum), walked in the park with Sanhedrin tombs, visited the Holocaust Remembrance Museum (difficult but important to remember), walked through the old city of Jerusalem, navigated the public transit system, visited the Western Wall (aka Wailing Wall), and the tunnels under the western wall.

Navigating the densely packed old city and public transit system proved to be more stressful and time-consuming than anticipated, so be sure to allow plenty of extra time, particularly if you book a tour at a specific time. I missed the first Western Wall underground tunnel tour, but was able to reschedule for later that day, and made it on time. Really cool!

Exploring the Old City of Jerusalem

There is so much to see in the old city of Jerusalem, and it left me wanting more! I spent several days wandering around and visiting historical and holy sites there, which was really cool. I highly recommend staying in Jerusalem (as compared to Tel Aviv) if you want to spend a lot of days visiting the old city. Otherwise, public transit/taxi costs and transport time will really add up.
