Easter in Jerusalem

Discover how I spent my Easter Sunday in Jerusalem in 2023!

Since I had the opportunity to stay a bit longer in Israel in order to spend Easter there, I decided to go for it! The timing worked out really well, especially since it wasn’t intentional. When I researched activities in Jerusalem for Easter, there was an Easter sunrise service at the Garden Tomb, from where Jesus is believed to be resurrected.

Luckily, I had already visited the Garden Tomb and had the chance to go inside, since it was not open for tours on Easter Sunday.

Easter Sunday in Jerusalem

At this point, I had moved from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. Unfortunately, Tel Aviv is quite far via public transit and quite expensive via Uber. So this is what my itinerary looked like.

Easter Sunday in the Old City of Jerusalem:

  • 4 am bus to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv
  • 6:30 am Sunrise service at the Garden Tomb where Jesus was buried and resurrected with 1500 other people
  • Visiting Mount Zion, King David’s Tomb
  • Had the Last Supper Room all to myself
  • Visited the Burnt House Museum
  • I got lost in the Old City and stumbled upon an Easter procession in the Christian sector
  • Finished with the Ramparts Walk

The trip timing worked out perfectly to be in Jerusalem over Easter. What a special experience!

It was really cool to be there in the Easter morning service. Especially along with 1,500 people from all around the world. It was a nice service, done for free, and in English.

Visiting the Old City of Jerusalem

From there I walked over to the Old City of Jerusalem. The city wasn’t very crowded due to the early time of day. I was able to visit some really cool spots and had them all to myself! The Ramparts walk was even free since it was Easter Sunday. At another point, I spent one day in the Old City of Jerusalem and visited the Holy Sites.

By the time I got home after that long day, I was quite tired. However, I was able to check off most of the remaining spots I wanted to visit during my trip. That was great!
