In January of this year, I led a group of travelers to have some awesome adventures in Cancun! We rented an Airbnb house, which allowed us to utilize the common areas to bond, as well as having the benefit of a kitchen for meals. When the rest of the group left, Diana and I stayed a bit longer to work and see more of Cancun.

While we did have to deal with some maintenance fixes during our stay, and there were a few hiccups as it was a new listing, overall it was a great experience. Everyone enjoyed sharing the house and thought it was much preferable to a hotel.

Some details on the house tour in Mexico: it’s a two-story house in Cancun for $112/night. The house has 4 bedrooms, 2 kitchens, 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, and 2 patios. It’s also close to the center and a main transportation hub.

Tips for renting a house in Mexico

When I look for an Airbnb rental, here are some things I consider:

  • Is the space private?
  • What do the reviews say?
  • How responsive is the host?
  • How fast is the internet? Are they willing to do a speed test?
  • How close is it to public transportation or walking distance from attractions, shops, restaurants, etc?
  • What is the price?

Airbnb vs. hotels: Which is best?

Airbnb can be a great way to see the world, especially if you do your research first. I never book with first-time listings with no reviews, since I had a bad experience in Morocco with some shifty business. Other than that, bearing in mind the other considerations mentioned above, I’m usually able to confirm that things are on the up and up.

Airbnb in particular is a great way to see Cancun because it’s a more cost-effective option to staying in resorts and beachfront hotels. I found that staying close to the city center/ADO bus terminal is a good location and we can still take Didi App (similar to Uber) or the local bus to the Zona Hotelera to visit the beach and other attractions whenever we want.
