First time celebrating my friend’s birthday in Cairo!

Most people dream of going to the Giza pyramids once in their lives. Not only did I get to go once, but in fact twice, in the same year. And even better, with a great friend Vicky.

Vicky came to Egypt for her birthday because she wanted to see the pyramids and she figured we could do it together! By the way, if you come to Egypt, be sure to contact Maryam Tareq Khattab for amazing tours with all the history! I got to see the Great Pyramids for the first time together with Maryam, and it was amazing.

Celebrating Vicky’s birthday in Cairo

The only thing Vicky wanted for her birthday in Egypt was to see the pyramids and go on a “felucca” for a dinner show, so we made that happen and we had a blast!

Top things to do in Egypt

Here’s how we spent a couple of days together celebrating Vicky’s birthday in Cairo:

  • We did a tour of the pyramids, including going inside the Great Pyramid and visiting Memphis and Saqqara.
  • We also went to a dinner show on a felucca on the Nile River. This wasn’t a real felucca, but was still a nice dinner cruise!
  • Had dinner at a restaurant overlooking the sound and light show on the pyramids (something I didn’t have the chance to do during my first visit.) This was really neat to see.
  • Vicky wanted to visit Khan el-Khalili market the day after Ramadan ended! Full of celebrations and young people enjoying the days off of school. It was a good look into the day-to-day life and hustle and bustle of the local market.
  • Mohamed Ali Mosque and the Coptic Quarter.
  • Al Azar Park (something else I didn’t get the chance to do before). I enjoyed seeing the park and having a little picnic with Vicky.
  • Manial Palace and Museum (beautiful palace, amazing to walk the grounds).

Exploring Cairo, Egypt

I was glad to have Vicky’s company and see a different side of Egypt than before. One of the (other) cool things I got to do in Egypt was go on a hot air balloon ride. I definitely recommend this experience, and it’s easy to do if you base yourself in Cairo.

On the plus side, since I had been there before, I felt more comfortable taking local Careem (like Uber). I even took a motorcycle taxi. What an adventure! We had a great time hanging out, exploring Egypt together, and celebrating her birthday in Cairo.
