Check out the tour of the house I rented in Guadalajara, Mexico for $420 USD per month!

I get a lot of questions about budgeting and how much rent costs in Mexico. There is a huge range depending on what you are looking for, where, etc. So here’s one example of something in the smaller budget range without a long-term contract. Keep in mind, this is quite far from the city center, but for my purposes of working and recovering from the fire, it was a quiet place to rest.  Check out the video below:

What happened after the van fire?

After the van fire, I had to find a place to stay nearby while I waited for the insurance to sort things out. Originally, I had hoped that one month would be sufficient for this process (it wasn’t!). So after the initial hotel where I stayed briefly after the fire in Tequila, I paid a van taxi service to transport me and my pets to the nearby large city of Guadalajara.

Guadalajara happens to be the second largest city in Mexico, so I figured no matter what happened I would be able to find my way home from there (buy a new vehicle, rent a vehicle, fly, take a bus, etc). I also knew that since the city of Tequila is very touristy and most people just stay a few days, rental rates were quite high there and I was probably going to find something more affordable in  Guadalajara.

Searching for an apartment in Mexico

With just a few days’ notice, I looked around on Airbnb for something with a yard, pet-friendly, fast wifi, and a workspace. I found this home in the Guadalajara metropolitan area for around $420 USD per month, utilities included. I did have a few issues with maintenance during my stay, but overall I was glad to find a pet-friendly place on such short notice.

My tips & tricks for finding the best apartment in Mexico

When I look for an Airbnb I check for the features I need (as mentioned above, pet-friendly, yard, workspace, wifi, Air conditioning if it’s in a hot area, and a workspace.) I also check the reviews to have an idea of what to expect. I very very rarely reserve a place without reviews because of some issues I’ve had with Airbnb schemes or no active listings.

Typically, I’ll search in a low budget range and see if I find anything that fits my needs, and increase the budget as needed. I often do long-term stays which help with a discounted rate through Airbnb as well. I’ll contact the host to see what their internet speeds are and if I need a faster plan if it will be possible to pay the difference for an upgrade, since it’s very important for remote work.
