For years, I dreamed of visiting Basque Country, drawn to its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and unique language. When I finally made my way to Bilbao, I was eager to explore its accessible hikes, historic sites, and coastal beauty. Whether hiking up Monte Avril, visiting the legendary San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, or indulging in Basque cheesecake for the first time, my trip was packed with adventure and cultural experiences. Here’s everything you need to know for your own hiking trip in Bilbao and Basque Country.

What to Bring for Hiking in Basque Country

To make the most of your hikes, pack these essentials:

  • Hiking shoes – Trails range from city-accessible paths to rugged coastal terrain.
  • Water and snacks – I loved grabbing tapas by the sea after my hikes!
  • Light rain jacket – The Basque region is lush for a reason – expect some rain!
  • Sunscreen and hat – On clear days, the sun can be intense.

Camera or phone – The landscapes are breathtaking, and you’ll want to capture them!

Unique Experiences in Bilbao

Cat Café in Bilbao 🐱☕

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting a cat café that rescues stray cats. Not only do you get to enjoy coffee in a cozy setting, but you also support a great cause. If you’re a cat lover, this is a must-visit spot!

The Puppy Sculpture at the Guggenheim Museum 🎨🐶

Outside the famous Guggenheim Museum, you’ll find “Puppy”, a massive floral sculpture of a dog created by artist Jeff Koons. Even if you’re not into modern art, this vibrant display is worth a visit!

Lifting at the Student Housing Gym 💪

I took advantage of the student housing apartments that allow guests access to their gym. It was a great way to balance hiking with strength training while staying on budget!

Basque Cheesecake

I finally had the chance to try Basque cheesecake in its birthplace! Unlike traditional cheesecakes, this one is burnt on the outside with a creamy, almost molten center. If you love desserts, it’s a must-try in Basque Country!

Tapas by the Sea

After a long day of hiking, nothing beats enjoying pintxos (Basque tapas) while watching the waves crash along the coast. Seafood lovers will be in heaven!

Exploring Gernika: A City of Historical Significance

Gernika is known for its tragic history and resilience. In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the city was bombed in an attack that inspired Picasso’s famous painting “Guernica”. Today, Gernika is a symbol of peace and an important place to learn about Basque history.

Understanding Basque Culture and Language

Spain is home to multiple languages, including Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Euskara (Basque). Euskara is one of the oldest and most mysterious languages in Europe, unrelated to any other major language family. Walking around Bilbao, you’ll see signs in both Spanish and Basque, giving you a glimpse into the region’s distinct identity.

How Long to Spend in Bilbao and Basque Country

If you love hiking and culture, I recommend at least 4-5 days:

  • Day 1: Explore Bilbao (Guggenheim Museum, Artxanda Trail, Cat Café)
  • Day 2: Hike Monte Avril, relax by the river
  • Day 3: Visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and enjoy pintxos by the sea
  • Day 4: Day trip to Gernika and other scenic Basque towns

How to Get to Bilbao & Transportation Tips

  • By Air: Bilbao Airport (BIO) has connections to major European cities.
  • By Train/Bus: Direct trains and buses connect Bilbao to Madrid, Barcelona, and other Spanish cities.
  • Getting Around: Bilbao is very walkable, and public transportation is excellent.

Final Thoughts: Why I Loved Hiking in Basque Country

I had always dreamed of visiting the green, coastal landscapes of northern Spain, and Bilbao exceeded my expectations. I loved how accessible the hikes were from the city, the unique Basque culture, and the warm hospitality of the locals. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, foodie, or history buff, Basque Country is a must-visit!
