I know what you’re thinking. Tequila as in the tequila, the liquor? Yes, my friends, the very same. It turns out that the city of Tequila, in Jalisco, Mexico is named after the volcano of Tequila in the same city where my van burned down. And the liquor is named after the city.

Visit the city of Tequila Mexico

Here in the city of Tequila, you can find all things tequila. From souvenirs to ice cream, numerous tequila distillery tours, and even the world-famous Cantaritos el Guero with cantaritos (check out the recipe here) bigger than your upper body. Tequila is a great city to visit for a day or weekend trip. You can even take the train from the nearby Guadalajara (which has an international airport) to Tequila. You can reserve an extended tasting tour at the Jose Cuervo distillery called La Riojeña (I recommend this, you can even book it walking up the same day).

I took advantage of my last day in Tequila before moving to Guadalajara and did a tour. I learned so much! Tequila is much more complex than I knew. I also tried tequila ice cream and it was good but also strong!

I recommend getting an early start if you want to visit the city of Tequila because it fills with people fast, and the tours fill up fast too. There were both foreign and Mexican tourists, and everyone was dressed up for the experience. There are also tour buses that will take you through the city.

If you have time you can visit the affordable tequila museum while you wait for your distillery tour to start. I highly recommend trying a cantarito at El Guero or at least in the city center. What a refreshing way to cool off! You can save the clay mug to make your own cantaritos at home, gift it to a loved one, or use it to put a plant when you get home (that’s what I did).

Where to stay in Tequila, Mexico

I stayed at the apartment belonging to Hotel Posada del Agave in downtown Tequila, which was within walking distance of almost everything. They were kind enough to put me and my animals up at a discounted rate.
