Ireland had been on my bucket list for years, and this road trip through Ireland did not disappoint. From dramatic seaside cliffs to exploring ancient ruins, celebrating a friend’s birthday for the second year in a row (last year was in Mexico City!), and indulging in hearty Irish breakfasts, this adventure was filled with unforgettable moments.

We quickly realized that renting a car was essential for this trip. Public transport in rural Ireland can be unpredictable, with delayed buses that risk missing connections. If you’re planning a road trip through Ireland, I highly recommend driving for flexibility.

Here’s a full breakdown of our road trip through Ireland, including highlights, must-visit spots, and travel tips!

Day 1: Cliffs of Moher & Doolin

  • Arrived in Dublin and picked up rental cars.
  • Drove to Doolin (approx. 4-hour drive).
  • Hiked the Cliffs of Moher, taking in the stunning ocean views.
  • Stayed in Doolin, a charming seaside town near the cliffs.

Travel Tip:

  • If you’re hiking the Cliffs of Moher, start in the morning to avoid crowds and experience the landscape in peace.

Day 2: Road Trip to Dingle Peninsula

  • Morning visit to the Cliffs of Moher for another look.
  • Drove to Dingle (approx. 3-hour scenic drive).
  • Stopped to explore historic ruins along the way.

Day 3: Killarney National Park & More Dingle Time

  • Explored Killarney National Park, a beautiful mix of lakes, mountains, and forests.
  • Spent time with friends, celebrating Chris’s birthday.
  • Another night in Dingle, enjoying the cozy pubs and live music.

Travel Tip:

  • If you’re driving through Killarney National Park, be prepared for narrow, winding roads. The views are worth every turn!

Day 4: Cork & Kinsale – Birthday Celebration! 🎉

  • Drove to Cork/Kinsale (approx. 2.5-3 hours).

  • Fish and Chips – fresh from the local harbors.
  • Irish Coffee – a mix of coffee, whiskey, and cream.

Day 5: Blarney Castle & Return to Dublin

  • Visited Blarney Castle, home to the famous Blarney Stone.
  • Attempted to kiss the stone but got scared! The castle grounds were incredible, and we even explored hidden caves.
  • Drove back to Dublin (approx. 3-hour drive).

Travel Tip:

  • Arrive early to Blarney Castle (when it opens) to beat the crowds.
